The Recognitio ceremony began with a prayer by Cardinal Gambetti, after which two "sanpietrini" (employees of the basilica) removed the wall that closes the Holy Door from inside the basilica. A metal container, which had been stored there since the end of the last extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2016, was taken out of the wall. This container contains items and documents from the last Holy Year, including the key to the Holy Door, a door handle, a parchment with the act of closure, bricks, and commemorative medals minted during the previous jubilee.
After the prayer, the cardinal archpriest, along with the pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, Archbishop Rino Fisichella, who is responsible for the organization of the Jubilee, and the Master of Papal Liturgical Celebrations, Monsignor Diego Ravelli, led a procession of canons to the prayer altar. The prelates then gathered in the Chapter Hall of the basilica, where they opened the container. Although the Recognitio ceremony is less known, it represents the first formal legal act of the Holy Year. It is an inspection to ensure that everything is in order.
Other Holy Doors that will be revealed belong to the basilicas of St. John Lateran (December 3), St. Paul Outside the Walls (December 5), and Santa Maria Maggiore (December 6).
