Plenary indulgences are a grace granted by the Catholic Church through the merits of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and all saints, to remove temporal punishment for sin. Indulgences are thus related to sins that have already been confessed and forgiven in the sacrament of confession and remove temporal punishment. Plenary indulgences cleanse the soul just as if the person had just been baptized.

Plenary indulgences for oneself and for the souls in purgatory can be obtained by fulfilling three usual conditions (confession, holy communion, and prayer for the intention of the pope) and by visiting the indicated places, where the faithful participate in holy mass or recite the rosary or perform the Stations of the Cross or spend at least 15 minutes in eucharistic adoration and meditation, concluding with the Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary, and I Believe in God.

The pilgrimage area at Calvary in Jaroměřice

The pilgrimage site Calvary above the village of Jaroměřice is a complex of significant baroque monuments from the early 18th century, which was declared a national cultural monument in 2018. It is also a spiritual seat of the members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre in the Czech Republic. From 1994 to 2022, members of the Passionist order lived and worked here. Currently, this place is managed by diocesan priests from Jevíčko.

At its origins stands the owner of the Jaroměřice estate, František Michal Šubíř from Chobyně (14th December 1682 – 3rd January 1738) and his wife Johana Constancie born Saková from Bohuňovice, who promised to expand the local pilgrimage site out of gratitude for surviving childbirth. Together with P. Jeroným Veith OFM, who visited the Holy Land and found the Jaroměřice hill reminiscent of Calvary, they decided to create a place resembling Calvary.

The first church built was the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (now parish), which is the center of the complex. The cornerstone was laid on the feast of the Finding of the Holy Cross on 4th May 1712. A year later, on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on 14th September 1713, the church was consecrated by the capitular dean of Olomouc, Kolovrat. Subsequently, construction continued.

The gently sloping terrain in front of the church is surrounded by an ambulatory. In the axis of the complex is the entrance gate with two prismatic towers. In the middle stands the statue Ecce homo. There are also three buildings in the area connected with the life of Christ in the Holy Land.

  • Chapel of the Tomb of the Virgin Mary
  • Bethlehem Chapel and Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. The Bethlehem Chapel as a copy of the Bethlehem cave in the ground floor and in the upper floor the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre
  • Stone of Unction

Near the pilgrimage area is the building of the priest's residence. The cornerstone was laid on 24th May 1730. In the year 1742 František Xaver Antonín Šubíř (son of the founder, 1713–1753) added the Loretto Chapel

Architecturally, the complex is attributed to architect Santini, but according to the reflections of the Czech art historian and expert on Czech baroque architecture Mojmír Horyna, it is more likely that the authorship belongs to Santini's follower, the Brno architect František Benedikt Klíčník, who was the realizer of some of Santini's Moravian buildings and his work on the priest's residence is proven.

The pilgrimage area belongs to the parish of Jaroměřice. Repairs, maintenance, and operation of this site exceed the capacity of the local parish, which does not own any economic assets and is entirely dependent on the generosity and kindness of donors. We thank all who are trying to help in any way. We will be grateful for any donation for the benefit of the parish of Jaroměřice, bank account: 1280361349/0800.
